Since China and Philippines’ relations have been improved, the mutual trust between the two countries has been enhanced. When Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the new Philippine ambassador to ChinaH.E. Mr. Chito Sta. Romana on June 7, 2017,Mr. Romana said: “I am honored to be the Ambassador to China during the time the two countries are developing the diplomatic relations rapidly. I am willing to work with China to promote greater development of bilateral relations.”
Mr. Romana was appointed to be theambassador to Chinaby Philippine President Duterte in October 2016. He was the former director of the ABC station in Beijing for more than 20 years. In August 2016, he accompanied the former Philippine PresidentRoberto Ramos visited Hong Kong, known as the “ice-breaking tour”. “Hello Mr. Ambassador! Today it is our honor to have this interview with you. As the junior journalists, we are interview a senior journalist like you because you have been working in American Broadcasting Company Beijing branch for over 20 years. In your career in media, how did you become a journalist? Any stories to share with us?” we asked.
"Thank you for your question. In fact,I was already a reporterin my high school. The school had a newspaper, I was a reporter and editor. I first came to China in 1971 when ABC station Beijing needed a foreign correspondent who can understand Chinese language and culture, so I decided to study Chinese. In the '90s, I joined ABC station in Beijing to send information about China back to ABC through the global satellite system. In China, the Wenchuan earthquake happened on May 12, 2008, I led my team went directly to the disaster area. We recorded a story about a woman’s husband dead right beside her to cover the tragic scene of the Wenchuan earthquake. The story won a news prize in the United States. As a reporter, I feel lucky and hard work. At the right time, we have to do the right thing to succeed our goals.” Romana said.
Another journalist asked: “Cultural cooperation is one of the important channels to promote people to people exchanges. In November 2015, the Philippines and China signed the “Implementation Plan of the Agreement on Cultural Cooperation from 2015 to 2018”. You are the ambassador to China during this period, how you will actively promote cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries? Thank you!”
Ambassador Romana said that the Philippines is one of the first ASEAN countries to sign cultural agreements with China. To date, 13 biennial cultural exchange plans have been signed and executed. In September 2016, the heads of Philippine Cultural Commission and other officials came to China to attend the 11th China-ASEAN Culture Forum organized by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. In October 2016, the Chinese Ministry of Culture sent the Chinese National Ballet Troupe to the Philippines to perform the ballet “Raising the Red Lantern”, the show received high recognition and favorable comments from Philippine audiences.In February 2017, the Chinese Ministry of Culture sent a delegation from Quanzhou City, Fujian Province to the Philippines to attend the “Spring Festival Gala”. Many Philippine students are studying in China now. Next year there will be a Philippine sports team to take their training camp in China. This is an important part of the cultural exchanges between the two countries.
“Philippines has rich tourism resources. In October 24th, 2016, Philippines and China signed a memorandum of understanding on various tourism programs, and Philippines became one of the tourist destinations for Chinese citizens. Could you share with us about Philippines's unique culture and tourism? Thank you!” a junior journalist asked the ambassador.
Ambassador Romana said that promoting tourism is the quickest way to develop friendly relations between the two countries. The Philippines has world-class beaches, perfect sunshine, beautiful beaches, mild waves, tropical plants, various styles of buildings, free and easy diving and variety of fruit and food, all of those are the perfect combination for people who love the sun and the beach. In 2017, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the Philippines is expected to exceed one million.
The friendship between China and the Philippines is not only the common wish of the two peoples, but also the development trend of the two countries and regional harmony. The relations between China and the Philippines have already started a new starting point.
