Autumn in Beijing is full of colors; the maple leaves are a delight to the eye with wonderful mood and beautiful scenery. On September 14, at the invitation of Ambassador of Slovakia to China His Excellency Mr. Milan Lajčiak, President Wei Yan of Home and Abroad News Press joined ambassadors from various countries and officials from international organizations at the Slovak Ambassador’s Residence for the National Day of the Slovak Republic and Constitution Day reception. Also in attendance were Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for China-Central and Eastern European Countries Cooperation Mr. Chen Guoyou, Major General Liu Jun of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy; and State Secretary for Investment, Regional Development, and Information Technology of the Slovak Republic Mr. Radomír Šalitroš.

At 7:00 p.m., the national anthems of the Slovak Republic and the People’s Republic of China were played in the venue. Then, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to China H.E. Mr. Milan Lajčiak together with Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for China-Central and Eastern European Countries Cooperation Mr. Chen Guoyou, Major General Liu Jun of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy; and State Secretary for Investment, Regional Development, and Information Technology of the Slovak Republic Mr. Radomír Šalitroš took the stage to raise a toast together with the audience, celebrating the commemoration of the Slovak Republic’s National Day and Constitution Day.

Ambassador Milan Lajčiak delivered a welcome speech. He said, “It is my honor to welcome you all to the Embassy of Slovakia in China. Today, I stand here with great pride and honor to commemorate important events in Slovakia’s history: first, to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the independence of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak National Uprising Day, and Constitution Day”. On September 1, 1992, following the peaceful dissolution of the Czechoslovak Federation, the Slovak National Council adopted the current Constitution. From joining the European Union and NATO to becoming a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Slovakia’s diplomatic endeavors have progressed steadily and with a down-to-earth approach. We have worked hand in hand with countries around the world, including our host country, China, to lay a solid foundation for mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation.”

Ambassador Milan Lajčiak also noted that during World War II, Slovak national heroes wrote a great chapter in history by overcoming fascist oppression through courage, sacrifice, and the spirit of freedom. Constitution Day on September 1 marks the adoption of our country’s Constitution in 1992, which embodies our national values and our commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Our Constitution stands as a vivid testament to our nation’s resilience, unity, and aspiration for a just society.

Ambassador said: “I am pleased to note that, guided by the spirit of our Constitution, our diplomatic efforts, and the memory of those brave souls who participated in the Slovak National Uprising, we have weathered both favorable circumstances and challenges. No matter how circumstances have changed, Slovakia has consistently demonstrated its strength in independence, self-reliance, and self-driven development. As a member of the European Union, we have successfully integrated into the process of European integration, and the EU remains an important channel for Slovakia’s development.”

Effective January 1, 1993, Slovakia and the Czech Republic became two separate and sovereign nations. In the course of Slovakia’s history since independence, the country has designated August 29th, the anniversary of the 1944 national uprising against German occupation, as its National Day. In addition, every year on September 21, Slovakia celebrates Armed Forces Day, a holiday that not only commemorates the nation’s independence and freedom but also honors the loyalty and courage of its armed forces.

All guests applauded as Ambassador Milan Lajčiak delivered his remarks in the backyard of the Slovak Ambassador’s Residence. The backyard in autumn was cool and lush with greenery; the night was enchanting, and the air was fresh. It felt like a vast natural oxygen oasis, filled with flowers, grass, and small trees, with the scent of blossoms wafting through the air. The ambassadors and guests gathered together into small groups and had friendly exchange with each other. President Wei Yan of Home and Abroad News Press joined many ambassadors to taste wine and eat the grilled meat while enjoying the amazing performances by Slovak artists.

President Wei Yan toasted each ambassador in turn and extended an invitation to them for a special tour to Guangzhou and Foshan from November 21st to 25th to participate in the Home and Abroad News Press Ambassadors’ Club “Economic, Trade, and Cultural Tour to the Greater Bay Area” and the 4th “Ambassador’s Cup” Invitational Golf Tournament. She expressed her hope that the ambassadors and diplomats would enjoy a wonderful trip in the Greater Bay Area!
