Since May 7th 2023, Uruguayan Minister Fernando Mattos paid an official visit to China. During his 19-day visit to China, he visited Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, Henan, Shanghai, Jilin and Shandong, and met with senior officials from the General Administration of Customs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the State Administration of Grain Supplies and Reserves, the State Administration of Market Supervision, the Ministry of Water Resources and the State Forestry and Grassland Bureau in Beijing. On May 23, Minister Fernando Mattos met with Mr. LvWeihong, Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Customs of China, after which the two sides signed the minutes of the 7th China-Uruguay Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Technical Advisory Committee Meeting. on May 25, he also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Minister Tang Renjian of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China on the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay in the field of fisheries and aquaculture. In addition, during his trip, he witnessed the signing of important cooperation agreements between Uruguayan and Chinese institutions, the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Scientific Research Institute of the State Administration of Grain and Material Reserves of China and the National Agricultural Research Institute of Uruguay, and agreements related to cooperation between China and Uruguay in the equine industry.
Minister Fernando Mattos said that this official visit is a part of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Uruguay. He said that in 2022, the bilateral trade between China and Uruguay reached $7.4 billion USD, a figure 60 times higher than when the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1988. The visit will also create good conditions for the Uruguayan president's visit to China, which will further consolidate bilateral relations between the two countries.
Minister Fernando Mattosalso highly spoke about China's rapid development, praising the country's astonishing speed in lifting itself out of poverty and hailing it as a feat in human history, which he believes has shattered the Western world's preconceived notions of China.
