On March 19, 2026, at the invitation of Ambassador of Mauritius to China H.E. Mr. Gaetan Michel Siew Hew Sam, President Wei Yan of Home and Abroad News Press attended a reception marking Mauritius’ Independence Day and the 54th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritius, held at the International Ballroom of the Peninsula Hotel in Beijing, with many ambassadors from various countries. Mr. Liu Yuxi, Special Representative of the Chinese Government for African Affairs and Ambassador for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, attended the reception as the Chinese officiating guest and delivered a speech on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulating Mauritius on its Independence Day and the 54th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritius.

At 7:00 p.m., the national anthems of the Republic of Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China were played at the venue, followed by a welcome address by Ambassador of Mauritius to China H.E. Mr. Gaetan Michel Siew Hew Sam.

Ambassador Gaetan Michel Siew Hew Sam said: “Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we celebrate Mauritius, not merely to raise a flag or commemorate a chapter of history, but to pursue an enduring harmony. Harmony is made from peace, justice, and hope. In a world that is at times fraught with uncertainty, Mauritius offers a simple yet precious answer: diversity can coexist within unity.”

Ambassador Gaetan Michel Siew Hew Sam noted that the friendship between Mauritius and China has a long history, and that Mauritius firmly adheres to the One-China Principle. He also expressed gratitude for China’s support for Mauritius’s development and revitalization. Ambassador emphasized that Mauritius is willing to deepen political mutual trust with China, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, and promote the sustained progress of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Ambassador Gaetan Michel Siew Hew Sam congratulated China on the successful convening of the Two Sessions. He noted that the “ironclad” friendship between Mauritius and China has withstood the test of time and represents the choice of history and the people. Mauritius is willing to work with China to enhance strategic mutual trust, strengthen friendly cooperation, and promote greater development in bilateral relations, and he expressed confidence that the level of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides will be further elevated.

Special Representative of the Chinese Government for African Affairs and Ambassador for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Mr. Liu Yuxi delivered a speech. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritius, the two countries have maintained friendly exchanges and achieved positive results in practical cooperation. The recently concluded “Two Sessions” of the National People’s Congress of China adopted the 15th Five-Year Plan, which calls for expanding high-level opening-up and creating a new landscape of win-win cooperation. China is willing to work with Mauritius to leverage the early-mover advantage of China-Mauritius free trade cooperation, accelerate the implementation of zero-tariff measures in Mauritius, and jointly write a new chapter in the shared development of China and Mauritius. He also noted that Mauritius is an important partner of China in Africa. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, China-Mauritius relations have maintained a positive momentum of development. China is willing to further deepen cooperation with Mauritius across all fields and jointly promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

During the reception, a series of traditional Mauritian fashion shows and musical performances took place, showcasing the unique cultural charm of Mauritius while providing a platform for interaction among Chinese and Mauritian guests. This further strengthened the consensus on friendly cooperation between the two countries and injected new vitality into the continued deepening of China-Mauritius relations.
