Shaolin Temple has the reputation of "the ancestral originof Zen, the world's first famous temple", which represents that it is the ancestral birthplace of Chinese Zen Buddhism and Shaolin Marital Arts.On August 1, 2010, UNESCO listed the Shaolin Temple and other8 historical sites as a World Heritage Sites.
当日下午四点，少林寺方丈释永信身披袈裟在少林寺门口迎接大使代表团。释永信对使节团的到访表示欢迎，随后，释永信方丈引领使节们参观少林寺。进入山门，走在莲花甬道上，永信方丈向各国驻华大使介绍说，禅宗的初祖菩提达摩来到少林寺传授大乘壁观禅法，奠定了流传至今的禅宗，也奠定了少林寺禅宗祖庭的地位。近年来，少林寺在世界各国大力弘扬少林禅宗文化，使得禅宗在世界各地开枝散叶。韩国、日本、美国等世界很多国家都有少林禅宗派别。观看完“天下第一祖庭”的匾额，永信方丈向使节团介绍太宗皇帝碑，以及唐朝时少林寺的盛况。

在大雄宝殿，永信方丈向使节团讲到，少林寺的大雄宝殿内有两位独有的护法，一位是紧那罗王，一位便是菩提达摩，少林的禅武便来于此。紧那罗王是以武护法，菩提达摩是悟禅修行，二者相容便是少林禅武合一的最高境界。

少林寺包括少林寺常住院、塔林、初祖庵、二祖庵、达摩洞、十方禅院、武术馆等主要建筑群。少林寺常住院是少林寺的核心，是主持和尚和执事僧进行佛事活动的地方，总面积三万多平方米，为七进建筑。穿过庙门，但见寺院殿宇高大宏伟，气势恢宏。寺内有大雄宝殿、天王殿、藏金阁、禅堂……门前游客密集，殿堂香火缭绕，殿内菩萨塑像高大威武，殿外古树参天。大使们在这里感受到中国佛教文化与功夫精髓。

在少林寺住持的安排下，中外新闻社总裁韦燕携大使们换上少林寺服装，在寺院殿宇请武僧们教打“中国功夫”。捷克共和国驻华大使佟福德阁下、津巴布韦共和国驻华大使马丁•切冬多阁下等随着音乐每一个动作认真学习，现场“嘿、嗨、吼”叫喊声嗨翻全场。释永信大师解释说，坐禅是少林武术重要的一环，要学好少林武术，不仅要练习招式，更要练就心法，加入“佛学、道学、儒学”的传统哲学。
